Pull back the fitted sheet at the head of the bed and check the mattress seams and the corners behind the headboard for pepper-like fecal spots, rust stains, or shed skins. Clear? Unpack normally. Not clear? Request a different room, at least two floors away.

When You Get Home: The 10-Minute Routine

This routine breaks the chain even if something did climb aboard:

• Unpack luggage on a hard floor (garage or entryway), never on beds or sofas
• Run all clothing — worn or not — through a dryer on high heat for 30 minutes
• Vacuum the luggage inside and out, then empty the vacuum outside

Early Signs You Brought Something Home
